We are excited to take part, present and be a sponsor of the Third International Workshop ‘Analysing Art: New Technologies – New Applications’, from 24-27 April 2022, Florence, Italy.
The event is dedicated to the application of new technologies in the analysis of cultural heritage and we will be showcasing Terahertz NDT Solutions from Terametrix Inc, which has proven solutions in the field of art preservation and analysis; and can be included in amongst the high-tech trends that have been impacting cultural heritage and art conservation in recent years.
Terahertz imaging is perfect for examining the structure of the layers within the painting in fine detail, without contact. Terahertz time-domain imaging using the TeraMetrix T-Ray 5000 system provides detailed information on the internal layer structure, providing insight into the preparation layers present under the mural itself. Data from this type of imaging can be critical in determining preservation schemes for some of our most iconic, yet ageing, pieces of artwork. If a layer is loose, prone to degradation or delaminated, then that area can be treated and maintained specifically to slow deterioration.
In 2020 The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (Japan) coordinated a project that covered the examination of on of the most famous paintings in the world “The Last Supper” by Leonardo Da Vinci, to be examined using terahertz (THz) and millimeter waves. The project, based on their experience in cultural heritage science research field, was conducted in collaboration with the Istituto di Fisica Applicata “Nello Carrara” of the National Research Council (Florence, Italy) and associated museums. Advanced NDT methods are increasingly being used in Cultural Heritage conservation to help manage and maintain assets. Baugh & Weedon are global partners representing TeraMetrix and have dedicated personnel working with Terahertz NDT applications with the TeraMetrix team.
